Nature as viewed from the busIf there's one thing of value I remember from high school, it's the mornings. There is nothing stranger than a 6:15am wake-up, a snowy stumble down the driveway, and a half-dead clamber into the snarling bus as it coughs exhaust into the air. This coupled with an attempt not to notice the driver, who is wearing shorts despite it being 28 degrees, and his disturbing full calf tattoo of a deranged clown.
Everyone else was texting or asleep, I remember, which lent a strange loneliness to the drive. The sun would rise as we went, and this was strangest of all. The red sun rises over a snowy landscape with a suddenness unlike any other, staining the sky but not diminishing the icy blue of the snow. The trees stand out a very dark navy blue, almost black, and it was not uncommon for the moon to still be out after the blood red of the sunrise had faded, though it seemed somewhat disturbed by the ordeal.
